What is Counselling?

Counselling is a process in which a trained professional supports an individual to explore and understand their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Counselling can address a wide range of issues including mental health concerns, relationship issues, life transitions, personal development, behavioural issues, trauma and crisis. Counsellors use various therapeutic approaches to support the individual in gaining insights into their feelings and behaviours, to develop coping strategies and to make positive changes in their lives.

How do I know if I need counselling/therapy?

Deciding you need counselling is a very personal decision, and for many can feel very daunting.

Remember, seeking therapy doesn’t mean you are weak or incapable of handling your problems. It is a proactive step towards taking care of your mental health. If you are unsure, please drop me an email or give me a call and we can talk through the different options.

What happens in a counselling session?

Your therapist will provide you with a safe environment in which you can explore your concerns. You are free to discuss whatever you wish, from everyday events, dilemmas, feelings, and thoughts, to regret or aspirations. A fundamental part of effective therapy is the establishment of the relationship between the client and the therapist, where the client fosters a sense of safety and feels listened to and understood.

What issues can counselling help with?

Counselling can assist with a broad range of issues, including but not limited to; stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, trauma, grief, self-esteem issues, life transitions and coping with difficult emotions.

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."

Carl Rogers

How long will I come for counselling/therapy for?

This will very much depend on your unique circumstances and will be discussed in your first session and can be continually reviewed throughout our work together. I offer short-term, long-term, and open-ended counselling. Long-term and open-ended work will allow us to explore further back in your history. I will work with you to look curiously and compassionately at your past, helping you to better understand the patterns and attitudes that may be holding you back from making positive changes. Short-term work is more solution-focused where we explore the present.

How often are the sessions?

Research has revealed that the structure of attending weekly sessions can support the client in achieving positive outcomes, therefor this is my preferred way of working, however, if you feel this is not possible, I would be happy to discuss it further so that we can figure out a way forward.
